Question and Answer with Lisa Catherine Photography

What brought you to your career?

I fell in love with photography at a young age. While travelling on road trips with my family I often envisioned myself photographing the beautiful landscapes while left to my imagination.

Growing up I was always participating in some form of creative art: taking on a variety of dance forms, music, creative writing, art classes; and documented everything along the way with my camera. My post-secondary schooling took me on a much different career path initially but I discovered early on the importance of filling your life with things you love that keep you passionate and, ultimately, healthy. I once read that what you do in your free time is what you should be doing for the rest of your life, and so, photography.

What inspires you and where do you find inspiration?

Being self-taught I soak up inspiration nearly everywhere and in everything. Of course what drives me is my family and my hunger for this art. I believe when you have a true passion for something you never want to stop learning and growing and so I devote time every day to doing just that. I find inspiration in soft beautiful light, soft tones and textures, natural beauty, and obvious love. I am inspired by raw and untouched nature, and music that demands you stop and listen.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love the opportunity to be creative and the gift created with giving someone a tangible memory. I find it an honour to be selected to be a part of, and to create, such special moments in someone’s life.

What would you call your style and why?

Our style is organic, soft, and timeless. We aim to capture genuine emotion in a thoughtful yet raw approach.

How do you define a fine art wedding?

A fine art wedding is an event that has come together full of harmony and balance. Nature often plays a role in the overall aesthetic bringing in the colours and textures of the outdoor landscape and involves artistic attention to quality details. A fine art wedding is often a collaboration of artists working together to realize their client’s vision with the appearance of effortlessness; yet involves a tremendous amount of time, heart, and effort. The memories that are formed in the images evoke emotion and ignite the senses.

What would your dream wedding be?

Style is so important when it comes to a wedding, but to me, what makes it a dream wedding are the feelings left behind. As long as the couple is bursting with joy that day, the next, and years later – that is my idea of a dream wedding.

My husband and I had a very intimate and personal outdoor ceremony and reception with a string quartet and all of our favourite music, food, and people; all things I would not change. Though the styling of our wedding very much suited us at the time, if I were to style my wedding again it would take place in an untouched natural setting pulling in surrounding elements. It would take on a minimal yet thoughtful approach full of natural beauty. The florals would be abundant but undone, the food full of comfort, hair windswept, live music, and once again close friends and family.

How do you spend your free time?

Being a mommy, I use the term ‘free time’ very loosely. When I am not working I enjoy spending my time creating new experiences and memories for my little family. On weekends we like to explore our city and surrounding area finding great new restaurants, shops, and taking in local festivals. We can be found exploring the local farmer’s market, visiting rural greenhouses and vegetable farms, going on evening walks, berry picking in the strawberry fields, and spending time by the river.
